Edge 840

It takes the new software platform of the Edge 1050 series, but seems to largely be built on the Edge 540-ish hardware design.

The Edge 840 has BOTH touchscreen and full button set (previously only had partial button set). Added multiband/dual-frequency GPS. Added USB-C connection for charging/sync. Weight is 90g for Edge 840 solar (up from 80g for Edge 830). Battery life up to 48 hours non-solar, 78 hours solar. Up to 34 hours with Multi-Band GPS mode with Solar.

Garmin Edge 840: $449 — Garmin has the Edge 840 on sale for $399 right now, and the Edge 1040 down to $499 right now. This is the first time either has been that low.

If you want one that does most things well enough and some things really well, and you're willing to put in the work to try out and choose from its many features, go with the Garmin Edge 840. It's available for US$450, £450, or €550.

The Edge 840 Solar has been on the market for a few years now; Garmin officially launched it in April 2023.

The Garmin Edge 840 Solar packs an array of useful features into a compact body. The touchscreen is excellent and the addition of buttons is very welcome when wearing gloves.

The Edge 840 is the same size and has the same functionality as the Edge 540 but has a touchscreen.

The edge 840 starts at 449 dollars for the base Edition and 549 dollars for the solar Edition.
