What can fail

The aerostem fork steerer tube can crack or break, posing a fall and injury hazard to the rider.

Per Canyon Bicycles USACanyon describes the failure mechanism the CPSC summary omits: "It is possible that after a severe impact or high load situation, like hitting a pothole at speed, the fork steerer tube could crack or break," and "This could lead to the cockpit becoming detached and cause a loss of control and potential injury to the user." So the hazard is specifically triggered by severe impact/high load and results in the cockpit detaching.

Is this yours?: The notice does not state how to tell whether a specific unit is affected.Per Canyon Bicycles USACanyon's notice titles the affected product as "Speedmax CF (R41 / R073) fitted with V21 Aerostem" and tells owners to "Check the side of your stem for the V21 markings." Beyond the CPSC list, Canyon's FAQ explicitly names models that are NOT affected: "The Speedmax CF SLX and Speedmax CFR models are not affected," and "The Speedmax CF models fitted with a one piece carbon cockpit (R073 with cockpit CP0041) launched in April 2024 are not affected." So among R073 bikes, Canyon carves out the April-2024 one-piece-cockpit (CP0041) build as unaffected — a distinction the CPSC summary does not make (CPSC lists "all... models R073 and R41 with V21 aerostems").
What to do: Stop using the bicycle immediately and contact a Canyon Authorized Service Partner to schedule a free inspection and fork repair or replacement.Per Canyon Bicycles USACanyon adds concrete repair mechanics. Inspection requires disassembling and removing the stem to inspect the steerer tube clamping area. If the clamping area is undamaged, a reinforcement solves the issue; if damage is found on the clamping area, the fork is replaced (free) and the new fork also receives the reinforcement. The reinforcement is done one of two ways: "By fitting an updated and redesigned expander which has been developed specifically to solve this issue," OR "By bonding a specially designed aluminium sleeve into the fork steerer tube." Canyon states both methods are equally effective, the choice depends on what is fastest/most convenient for the location, and "The repair must use Canyon parts designed specifically for this solution. No other expander or sleeve should be used." The work must be done by a professional bike mechanic at a Canyon service location (customers cannot self-perform); owners book via the Canyon service-location finder, and Canyon covers inspection and repair cost. The page notes it was updated 4th February 2025 and "the repair process is now underway," with repair kits sent to service locations from mid December and full supply expected by end of January.
