What can fail

The carbon fiber handlebars can crack, posing fall and crash hazards to riders.

Per TrekThe notice adds the failure condition and identifies the specific parts: "the carbon base bar and handlebar/stem can crack if overloaded" — i.e., cracking is tied to overloading, a qualifier the CPSC hazard summary does not include. It further explains the consequence: "If this happens while you are riding, you could lose control of the bicycle and fall." It distinguishes two components by product line: a "base bar" on the Speed Concept SLR, versus the integrated "handlebar/stem" on the Emonda SLR and the aftermarket Aeolus RSL VR-C.

For Emonda SLR and the aftermarket Bontrager Aeolus RSL handlebars/stems: a two-step remedy — (1) to keep the owner riding, Trek provides an individual handlebar and stem (which are the owner's to keep) plus new bar tape until an updated handlebar/stem combo is available, and (2) the retailer notifies the owner when the updated handlebar/stem combo is available for installation. In addition, owners who bring the bike in receive "the equivalent of a $100 USD in-store credit" toward any Trek or Bontrager merchandise, good through December 31, 2023, with no cash value. In the remedy section the notice writes the aftermarket product name as 'Bontrager Aeolus RSL VC-R handlebars/stems' (VC-R), whereas the CPSC title/summary and the rest of the notice — including its own Figure 3 caption and the AFFECTED MODELS bullet — use 'Aeolus RSL VR-C'. This appears to be a typo in the notice but is a naming discrepancy a human should confirm.
