Does it have to go with the chain?
There is no gauge for a cassette. The accepted test is to fit a new chain and see whether it skips — which means you find out after you have already bought the chain.
The chain has a number and a tool. The cassette has neither, and riders are left with folklore: three chains to a cassette, or four, or replace both and be done. The mechanism is well understood and the manufacturer guidance is clear about the symptom — but the interval is genuinely unpublished, and the reason is that it depends almost entirely on how disciplined you were about the chains.

- The wear path runs chain-first, cassette-second. Park Tool states that “Using a chain beyond its intended wear limit will prematurely wear out your cogs and chainrings” — the cassette is damaged by a chain you left on too long, not by mileage on its own.
- The diagnostic symptom is specific and agreed. SRAM's Chris Mckenney: “Changes in tooth shapes and skipping under load are signs that your cassette needs replacing.”
- The accepted test is a substitution test, not a measurement. Mckenney again: “The easiest way to determine if your cassette is worn out is to install a new chain. If the chain skips under pedalling load then it's time for a new cassette.”
- The economic logic behind chain thresholds is that they protect the cassette. Park Tool's guidance is that a chain reaching 0.5% should be changed before it reaches 0.75% or 1.0%, because excessive wear “will start eating into cassettes” — replacing chains being much cheaper than replacing cassettes.
- The common rule of thumb is roughly three to four chains per cassette. One rider in road.cc's comments put it as “I reckon a cassette lasts for about 3, sometimes 4 chains, so about 10,000 miles.” Treat it as a planning heuristic, not a spec — it assumes each chain came off at the right time.
- Riders who rotate several chains and swap them at short intervals report far longer cassette life; the same thread includes “I managed to get over 12k miles out of this cassette” while rotating multiple chains every 500 miles. That is the top of the reported range under an unusually disciplined routine, and it is anecdote rather than test data.
- Chain suck and binding when back-pedalling are widely reported as accompanying symptoms of a worn drivetrain, though they point at the chainrings at least as often as the cassette.
- There is no published wear threshold for a cassette — no equivalent of the chain's 0.5%. Every source describes symptoms; none gives a number you can measure against before failure.
- How many chains a cassette survives is not specified by manufacturers, and road.cc's own feature declines to name a figure. The numbers that circulate are rider-reported and depend on chain discipline, cog material, gear selection habits and conditions — variables nobody controls for.
- The substitution test has an obvious and unresolved cost problem: it diagnoses the cassette only after you have bought and fitted a new chain, and a skipping result does not tell you whether the cassette was ruined by the last chain or the three before it.
- Wear is not distributed evenly across the cassette. The cogs a rider actually uses take the damage, so a cassette can be functionally worn in its most-used gears while looking fine elsewhere — and no consumer test isolates that.
Why the cassette has no gauge
A chain wears in one dimension. Its pitch opens up, that elongation is a single number, and a cheap tool reads it — which is why the chain gets a published threshold and a decision rule. A cassette wears in a shape. Its teeth erode asymmetrically under load, hooking in the direction of drive, and there is no single dimension that captures how far along that process a given cog is. That is the whole reason the guidance switches from measurement to symptom.
It also explains why the symptom is skipping specifically. A cog worn into a hooked profile will still mesh happily with the elongated chain that shaped it — the two have worn into agreement. Fit a chain at the correct pitch and the engagement no longer matches, so under high load the chain climbs and releases. Skipping is not the cassette failing on its own; it is the cassette revealing that it was reshaped by a chain you ran too long.
The rule of thumb, and what it actually assumes
Three to four chains per cassette is the number most riders have heard, and it is a reasonable planning figure. But it carries a hidden precondition that is rarely stated: each of those chains has to have come off at or before its wear limit. The rule is not describing the durability of the cassette so much as the cumulative damage of three well-timed chains — which is small. Run one chain to 1% and you can consume a cassette's entire remaining life in a single interval, and the count resets to nothing.
This is why the reported range is so wide. A rider rotating chains every few hundred miles and swapping at 0.5% can post five-figure mileages, and a rider who replaced one chain late can be buying a cassette on the second. Both are following the same rule of thumb and getting answers that differ by a factor of several, because the variable that actually matters was never the cassette.
Deciding without a gauge
The practical sequence is inherited from the mechanism. Measure the chain, because that is the part that can be measured, and change it at the threshold rather than at the symptom. If you have done that consistently, fit the new chain and expect it to run — and if it skips under load, you have your answer about the cassette, at the cost of a chain you needed anyway. If you have not done that consistently, or you do not know, budget for both, because the substitution test is likely to fail and a skipping drivetrain under power is not a thing to diagnose on a climb.
The uncomfortable part is that the decisive information is historical. Whether your cassette is fine depends on when the last three chains came off, and that is precisely the record almost nobody keeps. A rider who can answer "how many miles on this chain, and what did the last one measure when it came off" can make this call confidently and cheaply; a rider who cannot is reduced to replacing both parts on suspicion, which is the expensive default this whole framework exists to avoid.
