When does a worn ring actually matter?
Worn chainring teeth take the shape of a shark's fin — and the inner ring and the outer ring tell you they are finished in two completely different ways.
Chainrings are the part of the drivetrain riders replace last and inspect least, usually because they are the most visible and therefore feel like they would look broken if they were. They do not. The wear signature is a gradual change in tooth profile, and the symptoms that finally surface — chain suck on the inner, rough or unreliable shifting on the outer — are easy to misattribute to the chain, the cassette, or a cable.

- The inner and outer rings announce failure differently, and knowing which is which is most of the diagnosis. Mckenney: “An inner chainring is considered worn when a clean new chain starts to chain suck...an outer chainring is considered worn when it is very rough running or the shifting is poor or inconsistent.”
- Note the precondition in that sentence: a *clean new* chain. Chain suck on an old or dirty chain is not evidence about the ring — the test only means something once the chain and its condition have been eliminated as causes.
- Chainrings are damaged by the same mechanism as cassettes. Park Tool's guidance is explicit that running a chain past its wear limit “will prematurely wear out your cogs and chainrings” — the rings are collateral damage from chain neglect, not an independent consumable.
- Chainrings are widely reported to outlast several cassettes, which are themselves reported to outlast several chains. The ordering is consistent across rider accounts and follows from load distribution — a chainring has more teeth engaged and sees a fraction of the shifting a cassette does — but the multiplier is not published by anyone.
- Riders commonly report chasing chain suck through cables, derailleur alignment and chain replacement before arriving at the inner ring, which matches the fact that the symptom is shared with several cheaper faults.
- There is no measurable threshold. Unlike the chain's 0.5%, no manufacturer publishes a tooth-profile limit, an acceptable amount of hooking, or a mileage figure — the guidance is entirely symptomatic.
- "Shark's fin" is a description, not a specification. How much hooking constitutes a worn ring is left to judgement, which is why two mechanics can look at the same ring and disagree.
- Whether a worn outer ring is genuinely causing poor shifting is hard to isolate, because rough or inconsistent shifting is also produced by cable tension, derailleur alignment, a worn chain and a worn cassette — several of which are cheaper to address and are usually addressed first.
- Ring material and tooth profile have changed substantially — hard-anodised alloy, thick-thin narrow-wide rings, integrated power meters — and there is no published comparison of how their wear rates or failure signatures differ from the conventional rings this guidance was written around.
Reading the tooth, not the ring
A worn chainring does not look damaged. It looks like a chainring, because the change is a slow migration of each tooth's profile rather than any discrete event — every tooth erodes on its loaded face and gradually leans over in the direction of drive, until the symmetric shape it started with becomes the hooked one SRAM describes as a shark's fin. There is no moment at which it starts looking wrong, which is the practical problem: visual inspection works, but only if you know what the new profile looked like.
This is also why the ring is usually the last suspect. It carries the most teeth, spreads load across more of them than any cog does, and does a small fraction of the shifting — so it genuinely does last a long time, and a rider is right to check cheaper things first. The failure is not that riders under-suspect the chainring; it is that by the time they get to it, they have already replaced two other parts and no longer have a clean baseline to test against.
Two rings, two symptoms
The inner ring tells you through chain suck — the chain failing to release from the ring at the bottom of the stroke and being dragged up toward the chainstay. SRAM's phrasing sets the condition precisely: it is a worn inner ring when “a clean new chain starts to chain suck.” Both qualifiers matter. A dirty chain sucks for reasons that have nothing to do with the ring, and a worn chain sucks because it is worn; strip those out first and the symptom becomes diagnostic.
The outer ring is subtler. Its failure shows up as running roughness and shifting that has become “poor or inconsistent” — which is the least specific symptom in the drivetrain and shared with cable tension, hanger alignment, a stretched chain and a hooked cassette. That non-specificity is the real reason outer rings get replaced late: the symptom points everywhere at once, and the ring is the most expensive place it points.
Why this is a records problem
Every source here converges on the same causal story: chainrings and cassettes are worn out by chains that were left on too long. That makes chainring life a downstream consequence of a maintenance history — and it means the question "is my chainring worn?" is usually better answered by "how have my chains been managed?" than by staring at the teeth.
It also means the diagnosis depends on knowing what else is new. The inner-ring test requires a clean new chain; the outer-ring symptom requires having ruled out a chain and cassette that may themselves be near their limits. A rider who knows when each drivetrain part went on can run these tests in a sensible order and stop at the first that explains the symptom. A rider who does not is left changing parts until the noise goes away, which is both the most expensive way to fix it and the reason chainring wear has a reputation for being mysterious.
