How often does it actually need replacing?

The two biggest sealant brands disagree by a factor of three about how long their own product lasts — which is why every interval you have been given is a guess wearing a number.

Sealant is the one consumable on a bike that fails silently. It does not wear out where you can see it; it evaporates inside a sealed tyre, and the first time most riders learn it has gone is a puncture that should have sealed and didn't. The published intervals range from two weeks to seven months, and the disagreement is not sloppiness — it is a genuinely variable product in genuinely variable conditions.

  • Sealant has a finite service life measured in months, not seasons. Stan's puts it plainly: “The sealant should last an average of 2-6 months depending on factors such as: temperatures and humidity in your area, how often you ride, where you store your bike (cooler is better), tire casing thickness, number of punctures the sealant has already sealed that you never knew you had, etc.”
  • Both major brands publish a routine, and both are shorter than most riders keep. Stan's recommends that “A good preventative maintenance schedule for most riders is to check/refresh your sealant quarterly (every three months).” Orange Seal is more aggressive still: “We recommend checking it after 30 days, then every 15 days.”
  • The rate is driven by evaporation, so climate sets it, not mileage. Stan's describes the range as “Two to seven months, depending on heat and humidity. The hotter and drier the conditions, the faster it evaporates.” A bike that never leaves a hot garage is losing sealant while it sits still.
  • Punctures you never noticed consume sealant. Orange Seal attributes faster drying to “Punctures, especially the ones you don't know about, and the porosity of the tires” — meaning a tyre that has been quietly doing its job is the one most likely to be empty.
  • Race-oriented formulations trade life for performance and need their own schedule. Stan's states that “Race Sealant should be inspected more often than standard sealant, approximately every 2-3 weeks.”
What riders reportcommunity consensus — anecdote, not proof
  • The near-universal shop check is the shake test — Stan's own version is “With ours, you can shake the tire (off the bike) and if you hear it sloshing around, you're good to go.” It is genuinely useful as a negative test: no slosh is a reliable sign of a problem. It is far weaker as a positive one, because it tells you liquid is present and nothing about whether enough of it is still active.
  • Riders commonly report getting materially longer life than the published numbers, particularly in cool, humid climates and with thicker casings. That direction is consistent with the manufacturers' own stated variables, but it is self-reported and unmeasured — nobody weighing their tyres is posting about it.
Still opencontested, individual, or unknown
  • The brands do not agree, and the gap is the whole decision. Stan's says two to seven months; Orange Seal says “you should get one to three months for tubeless set ups.” Both are describing their own product, so neither is wrong — but a rider holding both numbers has no way to know which curve their setup is on.
  • Whether to top up or strip and refill is contested. Orange Seal argues the residue cost is “really insignificant compared to the benefit” of regular top-offs; Stan's guidance leans on simply adding when needed. Neither publishes a study on how much cured latex accumulates before it starts costing you rotating weight or sealing performance.
  • There is no published, brand-neutral test that converts elapsed time into remaining sealing capacity. Every interval on this page is a manufacturer's recommendation about its own formula, not an independent measurement — so the honest answer to “is mine still good?” remains: open it and look.

Why it fails silently

Almost everything else on a bike tells you it is wearing out. A chain lengthens and a gauge reads it, brake pads thin visibly, a tyre squares off where you can see the tread. Sealant does none of that. It sits inside a sealed casing, loses water vapour steadily through the rubber and around the valve, and leaves behind a skin of cured latex that looks, if you ever open the tyre, quite a lot like sealant. The failure mode is not that it looks bad — it is that it looks like something, right up until the moment it does not work.

That is why the maintenance advice from both major brands is calendar-driven rather than condition-driven. Neither Stan's quarterly refresh nor Orange Seal's 30-then-15-day check is claiming that your sealant expires on that day. They are admitting that there is no cheap, reliable field test for how much sealing capacity is left, so the only defensible schedule is one based on elapsed time — and elapsed time since you last looked is a thing you have to actually record.

Reading the disagreement

It is tempting to average the two brands into a single number and move on. Don't. Stan's two-to-seven months and Orange Seal's one-to-three are not competing estimates of the same quantity; they are two different formulations described by the people who make them, and the spread inside each range is wider than the gap between them. Stan's own low end (two months) sits comfortably inside Orange Seal's range. The useful signal is not the midpoint — it is that both brands consider the variance large enough to publish as a range rather than a number.

What actually determines where you land is listed by both of them and is almost entirely environmental: ambient heat, humidity, how porous your casing is, and how many punctures the sealant has already spent itself on. None of those are things you notice happening. A rider in a dry, hot climate running thin race casings is at the fast end of both brands' ranges simultaneously, and a rider storing a bike in a cool basement is at the slow end of both. The interval is not a property of the bottle; it is a property of where the bike lives.

What to do about it

The practical routine follows from the failure mode. Check on a schedule rather than on a hunch, because the thing being measured gives you no warning. Use the shake test as a fast negative screen — silence means deal with it now — but do not read slosh as an all-clear, since a tyre with a tablespoon of thickened latex sloshes exactly like a tyre with a working charge. When it matters, open the tyre and look, which is the only test either manufacturer implicitly endorses.

The deeper point is that this is a date problem, not a skill problem. The mechanics are trivial and the intervals are published; what defeats people is that the last refresh was some Saturday in a month they can no longer name, and by the time the question becomes urgent — mid-ride, with a puncture that isn't sealing — the answer is unavailable. Anything that reliably records when you last touched it converts this from a judgement call into a lookup.
